Latinitas is recruiting a couple of Teen Leadership Institute Coordinators. These volunteers would help us lead the six-month leadership institute for high school girls. They would help recruit members, plan our monthly workshops, attend monthly meetings, teach girls leadership principals, coordinate guest speakers, organize activities, mentor participants and guide girls in organizing service projects. Housing Authority Club Mentors

Volunteers are needed to assist with mentoring girls (in grades 4-8th) at Latinitas' Housing Authority Clubs. These clubs meet weekly for a six-week period at various housing centers around town. Volunteers are asked to volunteer one day a week, between the hours 4:30pm to 6:30pm through July 20th. Volunteers are needed at the following sites: Tuesdays at Rio Grande Community Center (central), Wednesdays at the Roosevelt Community Center (northeast). Make a difference in a girl's life as a mentor in our weekly after-school programs. Latinitas hosts media enrichment clubs where girls can build confidence through creative expression. Through media, art, culture and technology, Latinitas strives to encourage and educate young Latinas to build confidence and succeed. The group executes its mission by publishing a bilingual digital magazine by and for Hispanic girls, facilitating after-school programs for middle school girls, hosting girl empowerment events, mentoring aspiring high-school writers and hosting innovative multimedia workshops in the community.

Interns are responsible for a wide variety of tasks and experience much of the process of putting together magazine issues, marketing strategies, publicity campaigns, fundraising projects or girl empowerment programs. Interns are needed to assist in developing content for LatinitasMagazine.org, accomplishing Latinitas marketing needs, publicizing its programs, developing fundraising initiatives, garnering community exposure and leading events aimed at empowering girls. This is a great opportunity to be published in a growing magazine or be an integral part of the development of a non-profit organization!

The internships are unpaid, but many interns arrange to receive academic and/or service learning credits for their work through their school. We are very willing to coordinate with such programs. Club Leader Spotlight: Stephanie Correa

Much like the girls they reach out to, Club Latinitas leaders have overcome their own obstacles and broken stereotypes to become successful college students and outstanding citizens and role models in their communities.

Interested in helping minorities and women in particular to express themselves in positive and healthy ways, UTEP sophomore Stephanie Correa has been leading the new Horizon chapter of Club Latinitas for a few weeks.

Recognizing the needs of young girls in her Horizon community, Stephanie Correa decided to make a change.

"In Horizon there is a great need for after school activities for grade school children since the distance from Horizon to [El Paso] keeps many students from opportunities to attend after school programs," Stephanie said.

Only having initiated the after-school program at Horizon Middle in early November, Stephanie touts attendance in numbers of 60 to 70 girls.

Stephanie said that the experience with teaching young girls will prepare her for her future endeavors. As a Club Leader, she will serve as a mentor for middle school girls and guide the club members in completing girl empowerment activities geared toward building their self-esteem.

"Working with youth throughout the world is the major focus of my career. Therefore, volunteering with Latinitas simply makes sense," Stephanie said.

Volunteer Spotlight: Gracie Cain

With the help and leadership of our volunteers, Latinitas continues to flourish and grow. Volunteers give their time and talents to help Latinitas from mentoring girls to assisting behind-the-scenes planning. Bringing their backgrounds and life lessons, volunteers give girls the hope and glimpse of a bright future.

Dedicating her free time to Latinitas, real estate agent Gracie Cain helps organize events for Latinitas to participate in, like the Veterans Day Parade and to set up interviews for Latinitas teen reporters. She has served as a guest speaker for Latinitas conferences and helped in planning special events. In the Spring, Gracie will take on a new role as a volunteer Club Leader facilitating an after-school program in Northeast El Paso.

Gracie said she realizes the importance of Latinas coming together for the good of the community. "All Latinas need to come together and get involved in any way..to make a strong force and impact on our communities," Gracie said.

Gracie takes her role as an active Latina seriously, that's why she volunteers for a few other organizations and at her church too.

Gracie is just one example of the many volunteers that dedicate their time to empowering young Latinas. Volunteers provide our young members a real-world perspective, offer advice and guidance for the future generation of Latina leaders.

Volunteer Spotlight: UTEP Women in Business Association

Recognizing the needs of the community and particularly those of women, UTEP's Women in Business Association (WBA) under the leadership of sophomore Paola Silva, has partnered with Latinitas to maximize both organizations' outreach to young girls.

"I decided to get my organization involved with Latinitas because one of the main goals of our association is to empower those in our paths, and Latinitas offers us the opportunity to empower young girls in the El Paso Community by serving as their mentors on a weekly basis and through various outreach events," Paola said.

The partnership between both organizations started with Latinitas Fest in June where WBA members helped with many aspects of the event including planning, organizing, and set-up. The success of Latinitas Fest convinced Paola, who presides over WBA, of the positive impact they cn have on young impressionable girls of the community.

"A lot of these girls don't know anyone who has been to or is currently in college, and if I can be that one person whom they know of that is pursuing a higher education, then hopefully they will get inspired and look forward to an education beyond high school," Paola added.

Latinitas relies heavily on the help of the community and its members. Volunteers give their time and skills to the empowerment of young Latinas every day by helping out at special events, providing assistance to club leaders at the Club Latinitas meetings and presenting during our workshops and camps.

Volunteers come from all places and all walks of life. Some are college students, others are professionals, but all are eager to be mentors to other Latinas. Monica Ortiz Uribe is one of those professionals.

A freelance radio/print reporter and Latinitas volunteer, Monica has spearheaded workshops on radio journalism for our Teen Latinitas Council and has even participated in the past as a guest speaker at our events. Monica said she feels that her role models are what have inspired to turn around and be the same.

"I realize I can be a positive role model for young girls and feel a responsibility to be a mentor. Much of my own success was thanks to mentors and now it's my turn," Monica asserted.

Monica said she views volunteering as a fun opportunity for volunteers and members alike to meet new friends and learn about real world issues.

"[Volunteering] will reflect on their character and leadership skills in the future. The girls will come to understand how a community works and where they fit into the overall picture," Monica said.

Volunteers like Monica provide our young members a real-world perspective, offer advice and guidance for the future generation of Latina leaders.
